Problems with ovulation are caused by any condition that prevents the release of a mature egg from an ovary (anovulatory cycle). Ovulation is a complex event in which hormonal signals and physical events are linked in a delicate balance. Ovulation can be seriously affected by abnormalities of the thyroid gland, over-production of prolactin, excessive male hormones (androgens), physical stress, psychological stress and extreme lifestyle changes.

Possible symptoms include absent or infrequent periods and excessively heavy or light bleeding.

Pharmaceutical medications such as clomiphene or human gonadotropin are commonly used to induce ovulation. The use of these drugs does generally result in ovulation, but the drugs are less successful in helping women actually become pregnant. Side effects such as hot flashes, abdominal bloating, breast tenderness, nausea, vision problems, and headaches are associated with the use of clomiphene, and are more frequent with prolonged use.

Acupuncture and TCM work to balance hormones and reduce stress so that the menstrual cycle can be regulated. This helps to promote the release of an egg. By treating the whole body, acupuncture and TCM  can greatly increase the chances of conception, a healthy pregnancy, and carrying a baby to term.
