What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine or Naturopathy is the art and science of treatment and prevention using natural therapies. Naturopathic Medicine is complete, holistic, natural, evidence based medicine employing a variety of modalities including homeopathy, herbal remedies, acupuncture, diet (nutrition) and lifestyle counseling. Some Naturopaths are cross-trained in other areas such as hypnotherapy and doula services.

Naturopathic Medicine blends scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine.

A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is a primary care provider that takes an individualized treatment approach to restore optimal health for you. Your ND can integrate their therapies with the treatments you are receiving from other health care providers.

Our naturopathic doctors focus on hormone balancing, stress reduction, optimizing nutrient absorption, and detoxification, with a special interest in fertility, pregnancy, and pediatric care. Here are a list of some concerns that they successfully treat.

The results of these tests guide the ND to create a personalized protocol to address any underlying problems that can be affecting your full health potential. Addressing these concerns can stimulate your body’s natural healing ability, and help to reach your health goals.

Some of the tests offered* are:

  • Nutritional Status

  • Organic Acids Test

  • IgG Food Allergy Test

  • Hair Mineral Analysis

  • Comprehensive stool analysis

    * Additional fees apply for tests offered by Total Wellness Centre. The cost of our tests are not included in the appointment fees.

Who is Your Naturopathic Doctor

Meet Dr. EeVon Ling, a Naturopathic Doctor, Certified Hypnotherapists and Hypnobirthing Practitioner, and Doula.

“Many people arrive at their current state of health as a result of a lifetime of lifestyle and emotional habits. As a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and certified hypnotherapist, my holistic approach takes advantage of both modern evidence-based and traditional systems of medicine for your individual physical and emotional needs. As a mother of two active children, I enjoy working with patients who want to take control of their health. I work in the areas of fertility, pregnancy and childbirth preparation (I’m a labour and birth doula!) as well as digestion, anxiety, stress management and smoking cessation.”

All naturopathic doctors in Ontario must be registered and licensed with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. They must complete 4 years of post-graduate training. Our Naturopathic Doctor has attended and completed a degree at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto and received advanced training in her area of focus.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a method used to help a person to access their subconscious mind in order to enhance relaxation, reduce stress, help change habits, improve performance and even improve self-confidence. Our Naturopathic Doctors practice hypnosis as a part and to enhance their Naturopathic medicine practice at Total Wellness Centre.

At our Centre we also offer classes in HypnoBirthing®, a comprehensive childbirth method. Studies have repeatedly shown the tremendous benefits of hypnosis while having no negative side-effects.

When the mind is in a hypnotic state, it is in a state of deep focused attention. While in this deep state of focused attention the individual can more easily access their subconscious mind and be open to suggestions. Suggestions are like messages we want to give ourselves. Even though the person will feel very relaxed while in hypnosis he or she will still be consciously aware of their surroundings and will be able to make decisions about what they allow themselves to do or accept.

Why Use Hypnosis?

Why use hypnosis when we can simply tell ourselves to stop bad habits or to “just relax”? Anyone who has tried simply knows it’s not so easy. Here’s why…

While our conscious mind is good at things like thinking critically, planning, solving problems, remembering things short-term and reasoning things out it is our subconscious mind that is responsible for our emotions, inner feelings, fears, “gut reactions” and long term memory. Our subconscious is automatic – it just happens.

Our subconscious mind leads our conscious mind.

Our subconscious mind influences how we perceive and respond to experience.

Our subconscious mind controls our habits.

This is why people continue to do things like smoke cigarettes, engage in risky activities, fail diets, think negatively and so on., even though they know logically that these things are not good for them.

So, if we truly are our own worst enemy or our own biggest obstacle, hypnosis can help change that.

Hypnosis is frequently used to treat stress and anxiety, habit control (such as quit smoking) and fears and phobias. Recent research indicates stress is a leading cause of infertility and that hypnosis can significantly improve your chances of conceiving.

In addition to our regular hypnotherapy, we offer special hypnosis programs:

Hypnosis Enhanced Fertility (for IVF including embryo transfer days)
HypnoBirthing Prenatal and Childbirth Preparation class
Stop Smoking Program
Hypnosis to assist in weight loss & maintenance and appetite control
Hypnosis for Fears and Phobias

Doula Services (Birth Coach)

A doula (also referred to as a labour attendant, labour coach) is considered the non-medical  person who provides continuous physical and emotional support and assistance to a woman before, during and after childbirth. A doula also helps the birthing mother’s partner and/or family by providing information, physical assistance, and emotional support. Having this continuous support during labour and birth is associated with improved maternal and fetal health and a variety of other benefits.

While the goal of an OBGYN or midwife is a safe childbirth, the goal of a doula is to ensure the mother feels safe, comfortable, confident, informed and supported before, during, and after the birth of her baby. Doulas cannot make or voice decisions for the birthing couple nor can they intervene the actions of the attending midwife, RN, obstetrician or other medically licensed professional active during labour and birth. Doulas help the birthing couple ensure that they are active participants within their healthcare team every step along the way.

A mother who feels safe, comfortable, confident, informed and supported is able to relax and allow the natural process of labour and birth to happen.

Many studies have shown significant benefits of having a doula present during labour and birth:

Benefits to mother

  • Shorter labours

  • Lower rates of intervention use during labour and birth

  • Lower rates of epidural use

  • Lower C-section birth rate

  • Higher levels of reported satisfaction

Benefits to baby:

  • Lower rates of fetal distress

  • Lower rates of low APGAR score at 5 minutes after birth

  • Higher rate of breastfeeding initiation

  • Lower admittance rates into the NICU
