Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Does Not Require Ovaries?

Researchers have discovered the primary cause of polycystic ovary syndrome may not be in the ovaries at all. According to early evidence presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting, scientists uncovered a genetic component to PCOS. This component is found in both women and men. In men, it can lead to male pattern baldness, obesity, diabetes, and heart problems. Jia Zhu, the lead researcher from Boston Children's Hospital, believes this discovery should cause a total rethink about what we thought we knew about PCOS.

The study’s results suggest PCOS is not an ovary-derived syndrome (i.e. PCOS may have ovarian-independent pathogenesis). This new information should help guide better research into the causes of PCOS and lead to better treatments and possibly a cure.
