COVID-19 Vaccines, Teens and Fertility... Any Concerns?

Covid-19 and Your Fertility. Do Teens and Young Adults Have Anything to Worry About?

With the approval in Canada of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in 12-17-year-olds, and vaccination appointments for anyone 18 and over now being scheduled in Ontario, members of the public have expressed concern about any possible relationship between the vaccination and their fertility. Health experts and medical professionals agree there is no link between COVID-19 vaccines and fertility.

Some people voiced concerns the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) may interfere with human DNA, and if that were possible, how would that affect fertility? Those concerns stemmed from both misunderstanding of the underlying mechanisms behind these vaccines, and certain myths passed between people mainly on social media sites and apps online.

At present, 1.53 billion (that’s billion with a ‘b’) people have received a Covid vaccine worldwide, with about 25 million people per day continuing to be vaccinated.

Anecdotally there has been some discussion of the vaccine temporarily affecting menstruation in some adult women. There is no evidence that the vaccine could cause a change in menstruation long-term or could affect fertility. Many youth experience irregular menstruation, vaccine notwithstanding, until more steady or normal patterns are naturally established.

Recent studies in pregnant women provide clear evidence that COVID-19 vaccines do not impact fertility or hormone regulation.

The fact is, thousands of women have given birth after both COVID-19 infection and also after vaccination showing no impact on fertility. There is an active tracking program called V-Safe in which almost 5,000 individuals reported becoming pregnant post-vaccination, without adverse effects from either the vaccine or Covid itself.

If you are trying to get pregnant or want to become pregnant, the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (which has taken a more active role in communicating with the public than Health Canada) officially states it is safe to get vaccinated.
