Total Wellness Centre Supports Regulating the Profession
Total Wellness Centre supports the proper regulation of acupuncture and traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Ontario. Acupuncturists and TCM practitioners are now regulated in Ontario by the self-regulated College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO).
Over the course of many years in Ontario, the government, in consultation with the community, has worked to regulate Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine in Ontario. Just like in other jurisdictions such as British Columbia, Ontario now has a new law, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Act, which regulates clinics and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine in Ontario.
This new law and College ensure the quality of care will rise. Minimum educational standards have been set, as have been hygiene and documentation standards. The practice of Traditional Chinese medicine is now regulated by the Ontario Regulated Health Professions Act, along with other health professionals such as Doctors (MD), Dentists, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists to name a few.
Along with regulation comes greater autonomy for the profession and increased credibility and acceptance. We anticipate more insurance plans will cover TCM services. TCM practitioners are now recognized as Regulated Health Professionals in the HCAI system, for health claims related to auto insurance.
At this time no traditional Chinese medicine practitioners in Ontario are permitted to use the term 'doctor' or any short form thereof, to describe themselves professionally. However, we anticipate in the near future, the College will permit such usage, as section 33(1) of the Regulated Health Professions Act is at the last stage of amendment to include the usage of such term. We await proclamation of the Lieutenant Governor which is expected anytime. Total Wellness Centre believes that TCM practitioners in Ontario must be given the authority to use to term doctor, as they have in nearly every other jurisdiction. Along with the right to use the term doctor comes greater acceptance of the profession both by the public and other health care professionals, and an improved sense of pride and ownership over the self-regulated aspect of the profession.
Total Wellness Centre supports any positive steps taken to increase the quality of patient care in our great profession.
Total Wellness Centre and its practitioners strive to be the most educated and qualified practitioners in Ontario. Each of our practitioners is a member in good standing with CTCMPAO and various TCM associations.
